WE Fest 2007

March 20, 2007

Once again eskimo kiss is taking part in this year’s WE Festival, held in Wilmington NC. This is the WE Fest’s 11th year and according to the newly-revamped and fancy website, the festival is going back to its roots and also featuring independent art and films. Sounds a bit ambitious because I certainly know how hard it is to coordinate these sorts of things, but kudos to Kenyata and co. for setting the bar extra high.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with WE Fest, it’s an annual independent music festival that is always held over Memorial Day weekend (that’s end of May for the calendarly-impaired). But it’s so much more than just another music festival. It’s become a bit like a family reunion; every year some of the same group of folks come down to the Cape Fear coast to help out or just show their support for the bands. And what’s so interesting about the WE Fest is the passion that it tends to bring out in both the bands and the listeners. It has such a big effect on people… several WE Festers have ended up moving to Wimington after coming down for the festival, they enjoyed it so much (of course then they are generally disappointed when they find out that Wilmington isn’t like that the rest of the year, but that’s another story for another time).

For me, WE Fest is especially special because it gives me an opportunity to return to my old stomping grounds. It’s bittersweet because I’ve got so many memories there, and many of them aren’t very pleasant. But at the same time, even though I feel like Atlanta was definitely the right move for me, I miss Wilmington dearly. If you’ve never had a chance to visit I highly recommend it, even if not during WE Fest. It’s a very nice, pretty area with a really cool downtown, located right on the riverfront which is great for walking (and is one of the things I miss the most, walking by the river with my dog). AND it’s just 10 miles from Wrightsville Beach, one of the nicest beaches that I’ve been to on the east coast even though parking can be a complete bitch!
