Ingrid Michaelson at Variety Playhouse June 10 – CD Giveaway!

June 6, 2008

Thanks in part to MySpace and to primetime television, Ingrid Michaelson’s career began to catapult last year on the strength of having several songs placed on Grey’s Anatomy as well as the single “The Way I Am” featured in an Old Navy commercial. Her album “Boys and Girls” managed to break the Billboard 200 and sell more than 210K+ copies, garnering appearances for Michaelson on Good Morning America, Leno and Conan. This is a hefty accomplishment for anyone, but what’s most noteworthy about Michaelson is that she shunned the traditional major label route, releasing the record through her own Cabin 24 Records imprint (it was eventually picked up for distribution by Original Signal/RED).

I’m a fan of “Boys and Girls,” in particular for Michaelson’s straightforward, earnest delivery. It can be difficult for a female singer/songwriter to maintain the listener’s attentional throughout a full-length release, but Michaelson does a good job with this by mixing up the instrumentation from song to song. I tend to prefer her more stripped-down tunes such as “Breakable,” with its brushed drumming and syncopated piano, but one can’t deny the radio-ready hits such as “Die Alone,” with its great build-up ending in which Michaelson does a great job with some really interesting backing vocals, or the introspective, Coldplay-esque “Glass.”

Having just wrapped up a sold-out Hotel Café Tour and stint with Joshua Radin, she’s hitting the road again playing selected dates with Sheryl Crow and Ray LaMontagne before her cross-country headlining tour, which brings her to Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse on Tuesday, June 10.

Original Signal was kind enough to offer up a copy of “Boys and Girls” to one lucky eskimo bliss reader; to put your name in the hat send an email to kim at eskimokissrecords dot com, with the subject “Ingrid CD,” by midnight on Monday, June 9. On Tuesday I’ll randomly draw a winner from all entries.
